Vehicle Activated Speed Signs

The Vehicle Activated speed signs were purchased by the Parish Council (one in 2009 and the other in 2015) to help to improve road safety within the village and provide a deterrent to motorists who drive at excessive speed.

Originally the older speed sign was moved between two sites in the Long Ashton but it is recognised that for maximum effect the signs should be moved regularly between various locations so in consultation with police and North Somerset Council four further poles were situated at locations along Long Ashton Road, Weston Road and at one location in Yanley Lane and a second sign purchased. To enable the signs to be moved between locations it was necessary to purchase battery-powered signs rather than solar-powered. The batteries are re-charged and the signs are moved by volunteers including parish councillors and other residents.

The main purpose of the signs is to provide a visible indicator of vehicle speed and to remind those doing more than 30 mph to slow down. Both signs also have the facility to record the speeds of passing vehicles, and although they do not meet the requirements of North Somerset Council and therefore cannot be used as evidence in speed surveys, they do provide the Parish Council with data about the speed of vehicles travelling through the village and also the number of vehicles using the main road.
