Community Groups: make connections, get support, volunteer

Getting involved with a community group is good for wellbeing but at times you may also need some support. Some of the groups need volunteers and offers are always welcome. There are a range of opportunities in the village.

Long Ashton Community Centre hosts a range of different groups, whether you are interested in arts, spinning and weaving, local history or finding out what films LA cinema offers each month, it's worth a look.

LA Horticultural Society aims to promote flower and vegetable growing, and to bring people together to learn from each other. Contact longashtonhortsoc@gmail.com

British Royal Legion 'To the memory of the Fallen and the future of the Living' The Club has closed permanently, due to the end of the lease on the building, but the Long Ashton Branch which has been operating for 80 years now meets at the Community Centre: Third Monday of each month, 7.30 pm. Manshed A group open to anyone interested in working on Woodwork or Metalwork projects. Learn a new skill helping retired craftsmen create things or fix them. Long Ashton Women's Institute (WI) A group of friendly ladies meeting up at the Community Centre with a programme of interesting speakers. First Wednesday of the month (7.30 summer months, 2.30 winter months). Coffee mornings and lunches in addition, and trips available as part of the Avon Federation of WIs. LA Together has been supporting residents in the village since 2020 by running events, enhancing the village, entertaining young people, supporting older people, working with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards (DofE) and signposting. More information on the website or contact info@la-together.org

LA Community Network provides support for those in the community and helps support wellbeing, grocery shopping and dog walking. Contact Info@lacovid.org

Tea and Tech meets twice monthly at the Community Centre 10-midday, usually on a Tuesday. The main objective of these sessions is to connect people to technology, be that via a smart phone, a tablet or laptop, supported by volunteers. For more information contact info@la-together.com.

LA Memory Café offers a quiet space for those with memory loss and their carers and meets in the Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of each month 2.30-4.30pm. Contact lamemorycafe@gmail.com

The Mobile Library may be easier for you to use than going to your local library. A range of services is available including books for everyone to enjoy – novels, bestsellers, children's book, talking books and large print – as well as DVDs.
